The Avian race

History: The Avians history is shrouded in uncertainty even by them. The oldest of Avians claim that stories passed down show that through manipulation of magical energy a race of winged humanoids bound their existence with magic, this change in biology gave them a deep routed since of magic. It is said that if placed in a place where magic does not exist the wings and markings of an Avian will vanish until the touch of natural energy returns. These claims have yet to be tested against the untranslated histories in the Avian Ruins, though a time when these writings can be understood seems far removed from the present era.

Basics: The Avian race is a species of winged humanoids that are steeped in magic. This avian race is distinguishable from most others by the intricate markings* they are born with. These markings are also one of the ways to identify the magical power of an Avian. The marking on an Avian is subject to change, upon important days in the Avian life, and extreme uses of magic the mark will extend covering a larger portion of the Avians skin. Sometimes this change is not visible as it can be hidden by clothing. Upon covering the majority of the body for the first time the mark will reset* though this is also marked by the growth of another set of wings. These wings will be the last an Avian ever sprouts. The mark will again grow as per normal on the following resets crystals will form on the forehead, and the back of each hand respectively. Total of three crystals one on each location (three resets). The act of removing the wings forcibly results in extreme physical pain the likely hood of surviving is not high, but in the rare event of survival few Avians live for long as the depression that comes with the loss of wings usually ends in suicide.  Wings forcibly removed from an Avian can never be reattached or regrown even by the most powerful of magic. If the Avian has not grown his second set through mark growth these can appear if the original set has been removed but they will not give the magical benefit the second set would normally impart

Strengths and weaknesses
STR: Strong in the ways of magic the Avian are quick with casting spells and are capable of doing so even in a high stress situation

WEA: With little stamina the Avian race is weakened by every spell they sling and will in time end up helpless. The number of spells that can be cast varies based on the power of the spell, the familiarity of the spell, and the markings/wing amount of the individual Avian. Generally the larger the spell effect, the greater the drain on the Avian. This drain can be marked by the regression of the Avians mark and by his wings slowly becoming translucent/vanishing. When the stamina has been removed in its entirety it takes 2 full days solid rest before the character will be able to fly or cast spells once again.

• EX of high drain: Brecht takes time and casts a flaming torrent spell to make a “waterfall” of fire. This spell would rapidly crash waves of flame down on an area of roughly 30ft in diameter to burn steadily anything within. In casting this spell the intricate markings covering his body noticeably fade, his breathing visibly becomes labored, and he drops multiple feet towards the ground.

• EX of low drain: Brecht mutters a few words and a small ball of light comes from his palm to hover a few feet before him, this light casts a glow in a 50ft radius. The spell being so minor in power costs leaves little visible traces on Brecht though on close inspection one can see the edges of his markings have paled.

STR: Due to the way their bones are structured for flight, their bones are capable of withstanding extreme blunt impacts

WEA: With little physical strength an Avian must rely on magic, speed, and flight to attempt to evade physical altercations.

*Reset- The term reset is used to describe the instances where the marking on the Avian body returns to the state it was at the characters birth. Effectively a birthmark until it once more begins to spread. This also marks a time of growth and maturity in the Avian.

*Markings- the markings of an Avian are a magical birthmark that grows as the Avian grows. This growth can be in magical power or as a person as both are very important to the Avian people. This mark despite its constant appearance in the race has yet to be explained with any legitimate reason, though the stories in their history claim it to be the visible sign that magic is tied to their blood.

The magic of the Avian relies heavily on the combination of verbal and somatic aspects. If a Avian cannot speak or move his hands the number of spells he can produce would be reduced to zero. If the Avian can speak he may cast spells even if his hands are bound, but these spells would be limited to spells triggered by words. If a Avian has been silenced but can move his hands he may cast spells that are limited to somatic components only. Thus the number of spells an Avian knows is limited to the words he can speak and the amount he can move his hands and his creativity with them.

An Avian does not live much longer than most humans, their wings are generally feathered but exceptions are possible and not looked ill upon. The color of the feathers is generally dependent on the color of the parents, two parents with dark feathers would typically have dark feathered child. Though a gentle dye can change the color and often rebellious young Avian will use this method to spite their parents temporarily. Until the age of 14 an Avian will not be able to actively control their magic or fly to the fullest extent, this is due to mental maturity until this point and the lack of fine motor controls
